Why Annual Backflow Testing Is Required in Washington State

In West Richland and throughout Washington State, maintaining pure, safe drinking water is strictly regulated under Washington Administrative Code (WAC 246-290-490) and City of West Richland water utility policies. Cross-connections occur wherever potable water supply lines connect to non-potable systems, such as automated underground lawn sprinkler networks, residential fire sprinklers, fertilizer injection ports, or boilers.

When hydraulic events cause a sudden loss of municipal water pressure—such as a major water main break along the Van Giesen Street corridor or heavy fire hydrant usage—a back-siphonage effect is created. Without a functioning backflow prevention assembly, non-potable water laden with lawn fertilizers, weed killers, pet waste, and stagnant water can be pulled backward into your home's potable drinking lines.

Because mechanical springs, rubber disc seals, and check valves degrade over time due to mineral scale and winter freezing, Washington water purveyors mandate annual certification of all backflow prevention assemblies.

Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB)

Commonly installed on elevated outdoor irrigation manifolds. PVBs incorporate an independently acting check valve and an air inlet valve to prevent back-siphonage. They must be installed at least 12 inches above the highest sprinkler head.

Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA)

Consist of two independently acting, spring-loaded check valves housed inside a bronze or stainless body. They can be installed underground in protective valve boxes to protect against back-siphonage and back-pressure.

Reduced Pressure Backflow (RP / RPZ)

The highest tier of mechanical cross-connection protection, featuring two check valves separated by a hydraulically operating relief valve. Required for high-hazard commercial, agricultural, and specialized domestic installations.

Our certified technicians perform precision testing and submit official compliance documentation directly to the water purveyor.

Our Comprehensive Testing & Repair Process

When you schedule backflow testing with our team, we handle the entire compliance workflow seamlessly:

  • Differential Pressure Gauge Calibration: We connect calibrated 5-valve test kits to device test cocks, recording differential pressure drops across internal check valves down to 0.1 PSI accuracy.
  • On-Site Rebuilding & Repairs: If an assembly fails testing due to cracked rubber diaphragms, worn O-rings, or calcium encrustation, our service trucks carry complete OEM rebuild kits to restore compliance immediately without a second service visit.
  • Winterization & Freeze Protection: In late autumn, backflow assemblies must be blown out with compressed air to prevent ice from splitting expensive bronze castings. In spring, we re-pressurize and certify the system.
  • Official City Compliance Filing: We generate and submit certified test reports directly to the City of West Richland Public Works Water Department, ensuring your service record remains in good standing.
